Question about business
What business minor should I get in addition to human resource management? As a psych major I am well aware that my major is useless on its own so I am going to get some background in business by majoring in human resource management. My college also offers seven other business minors, accounting, business administration, economics, international business, management, management information systems, marketing, and personal financial planning. Which of these would be beneficial along with my HRM minor?
Local businesses are more likely to utilize local ads, banks and other services. Many are taking the risks to diversify, grow and expand services to the community in many areas, including agriculture, oil and gas, health-care, education, food services, information oriented businesses and telecommunications, to name a few. So it is imperative that you know how to make your local business more successful.
This sector is craving low-cost, yet effective advertising in order to make their local businesses more successful. No matter what type of advertising you do — the main ingredient that makes your business successful is traffic. That applies whether you have an off-line business or an on-line business!
The number one thing you can do to make your local business more successful is to put up a company website, if you haven’t already done so. And if you have done so, and are not getting enough traffic to justify the expense, it is recommended that you re-evaluate your current site and software tools.
Local businesses typically attract customers by creating a unique company name, opening a prime location on Main Street and spreading the word through newspaper, television and radio ads. Business owners, even those who are older, are becoming more familiar and sophisticated in terms of internet technology and how to employ it to their advantage.
Today local business owners have many options because website packages include design, hosting, support, online reservations, e-commerce, digital video and audio production as well as virtual tours.
Currently, local businesses are finding that it’s not as expensive as they thought to build their first website. Customers visit search sites looking for businesses like yours and these customers become closer to your business as your advertisement is organized as a link to your website.
You might think that the net, more specifically your own website, offers few opportunities for businesses with a customer base clustered in a small geographic area. After all, the Web is “world wide”… a “global medium.” You would have been fairly correct, up until recently.
More and more, your potential clients are forsaking those heavy Yellow Pages paper books for Google and other engines. It’s easy and fast to do a search for “lawn care Montpelier” — and if you don’t find one in the town of Montpelier, widen the search to “lawn care Vermont” — just try widening your search with Yellow Pages!
Ads are an economical way to advertise your business online. Ads can be placed inside trolleys, on brochures, on promotional items and on your website. Ads are placed on regular e-Newsletters and outreach campaigns and distributed to a targeted audience on a monthly basis.
Your website will build targeted traffic and find new customers, even add entirely new income streams (ex., as a chimney sweep, your articles on fire safety not only endear you to local customers, but will attract global ones too — you can monetize this traffic through Google Ad-Sense ads and affiliate programs as well.

If you're already paying for the infrastructure, then it makes total business sense to try and get more activity and income through those same assets. As my ex business partner used to say about incremental business "Gross turns to Net", meaning that if all your overheads are already covered, then for any extra business, the net profit is the same as the gross profit – ie it's far more profitable than your regular business.
I suppose the questions you really need to ask are:
1. Does the new line sit comfortable with my existing business? eg Don't try and sell hotdogs through a clothing warehouse.
2. Is there a real demand for these new products?
3. Is the location of my warehouse suitable for this new line?
4. Will the new line bring in an acceptable level of profits?
5. Will the cost of getting into the market be reasonable compared to the potential profit?
6. Will the new business have any negative impact on the existing business?
Whatever route you finally go, I'm sure you'll make a success of it as I believe you are thinking in the right direction.
Good luck!

Online businesses need quality on-topic content that acts as a magnet to draw qualified prospects. In addition, you need to spread the word online by providing quality expert information on user conversation sites (e.g. Y! Answers) that include links back to your site if your site offers services that may benefit the people you're responding to.
Be sure you are 'pinging' the search engines so they know to come crawl your site.
If you have a newsworthy announcement you should consider the opportunities available by using online press releases. There are free places to do this but it's reported that the value available from the company I work at (PRWeb) is worth the spend (starts at $80).

First, you need a headline that is a powerful "hook" to catch the reader's attention.
The key to any advertising is to connect with the problem your company or service solves for the customer. That is the "benefit" you are selling.
So, are you selling clean? Or, more free time? Or, a happy (impressed) mother-in-law? etc. I bet you are selling "more free time"! People are busy – too busy to have time or energy to clean. But, hey, that's NO PROBLEM, because "ABC Cleaning Co." will do it for you, at a fair price, and to your satisfaction …. or it's free! (Note: your prices are FAIR – not CHEAP!)
Free? Yes, free. That is the ultimate guarantee. How can you prove to new customers that your service is great? You can't! But, you can show them that you believe in your service and take away all of the risk in their decision! (Yes, you will get scammed by a few people who will take advantage of the "free" guarantee, but…. you will get lots of new customers that will make up for that small 'cost'.)
So, What is the Benefit you are selling? And, what is the Headline that Sells that Benefit? And, take away the 'risk' from the customer by making a solid guarantee. Those are the keys to powerful and effective advertising.
Best wishes and good luck.

Small businesses organizations and clubs are low budget operations. They are also a tight knit group. Word of mouth works great in those types of business communities as long as you do good work. Problem is their budges are small and will need a large client base to be successful. So the first few years are going to be super tough and thin until you get a good client base. If you start doing stuff to cheep to get customers your clients are going to expect to keep paying that price once you get a business location or need to hire someone. I wouldn't narrow your clientele down to just small businesses, organizations and clubs. I would also look at bidding on corporate and government jobs. It is more work and red tape but the profit margins are higher. $100,000 in government contracts can keep you afloat long enough to build your business up.

Yes definitely. Any business can be successful if you do it right. I'd say get some books with advice for the type of business you have. I have a small business, and getting advise opened my eyes in certain areas, with things that seemed obvious after I read them, but I didn't think of them before.

First decide what businesses would benefit from sponsoring your prom.
For similar comparisons you don't have to look no further than your own TV set. In particular I'm thinking about the SuperBowl where they charge a lot of money to advertisers to advertise on the SuperBowl. And why do the advertisers pay such a high advertising fee? It's because they think that being seen on the SuperBowl will give them good exposure. The same thing with celebrities being given free clothes because the designers figure that it will be good publicity for them.
So decide which businesses would benefit the most from sponsoring your prom. Then write them a proposal or sponsorship letter. You can find examples of them on the Internet.
