Why Business Owners Should Write a Business Plan

Writing a business plan should be one of your number one priorities as a business owner, whether you have a new business or have one that has been in business for a number of years. A business plan will let you put a focus on your business and enable you to get financial backing if you should require it with a lot less headache. All businesses are different, and for that reason, no two business plans are the same. You can do hours of research and try to adapt an already-made business plan, but you have to be realistic in your hopes of finding one that will suit your needs is very slim.

When you decide to start a business, it is a good idea to start with a business plan. A business plan will let you make an outline that you can easily read and see where you want your business to go and how you will get there. As a business owner of a pre-existing business, a business plan can also be beneficial because you can re-evaluate where your business is and where you want it to go from this point forward.

A business plan should focus on four key points when you sit down to organize one for your business. One, it should allow the management or new business owner to illuminate, research and focus their business or projects and developments within the business and any prospects that you may have for the business. The second thing you need to do is to provide a clear and logical template for the way your business can grow and how it will pursue any business strategies in the next three or five years. Thirdly, the business plan should serve as the basis for providing information for third parties who are interested in your business, such as banks or shareholders. And last, the business plan should also serve as a point of reference on which your business’s actual performance can be measured and reviewed against.

There are many reasons why it is a good idea to write a business plan for your business. It is a beneficial document for both new and pre-existing businesses and can provide a way for the business owner to detail in an organized way the workings of the business. By researching the different types of business plans that are available, you can get an idea of what should go into a business plan. And if you are just starting a business, the business plan will be the first thing that financial officers will want to look at and if you can provide one to them that is explicit in its detail you can save a lot of time and stress in securing the loan that you need for your business venture.

first go to college but do not lose sight of your goal. half time college and half time business means you are not devoting your whole time to either.

not sure of where you can seek venture capital.

good luck you should go far, you have obviously put a lot of thought into this.

Visit http://www.cim.co.uk/MarketingShop/Tools/Marketing%20Planning%20Tool.aspx for a free online tool for writing a marketing plan (through the Chartered Institute of Marketing's website).

Writing a marketing plan will help you to keep ahead of the competition. It will provide you with the opportunity to set objectives and create plans to meet them allowing you to use information about the present to shape the future.

Without a plan, you cannot structure your approach to market. The marketing plan will help you decide your marketing mix – how and where you are going to sell your product or service, and how you are going to price it. A plan will build in time for you to research your market, decide which customers you are going to target, and ensure that your offering is something that customers will need and want.

A plan will also build in room for you to measure the results of your marketing activity, so you know what to do (and what not to do) next time.

With a plan, you'll be in a better position to identify your customers and deliver them an offering that drives competitive advantage. It puts the customer at the heart of your business – because without customers, you don't have any sales. A good plan, effectively executed, will take your objectives and turn them into a strategy that will deliver those objectives to the satisfaction of the company and the customers.

If you are likely to be getting more involved in marketing as a role, then you ought to get some background/qualifications in it.

China is really taking this advice to heart. Even now the Chinese government is investing heavily in the African oil and minerals sector, using their expertise to help African countries upgrade their infrastructure (roads, electricity, pipelines etc.), and providing cheap capital for African countries to exploit and grow, thereby making many friends and allies in the process. China is helping them grow, gaining strong geopolitical influence and privileged access to growing markets.

I think so except for the work for the non-profit project – no one is allowed to deduct time from taxes. That is, you can volunteer as much as you like but you cannot put a monetary value on it.

I LOVE NGOZI FOR WHAT SHE STANDS FOR,BUT IF SHE REALLY IS DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHER CROOKS THERE HAS TO BE SOME OBVIOUS RESULTS FOR WHAT SHE STANDS FOR!WE DON’T NEED ANY MORE TALKS,and I don’t need anymore talks with you,SINCE YOU SEEM NOT TO REALIZE THAT ANY TALK WITH NO RESULT IS OBVIOUSLY CHEAP.GOODLUCK & BYE

Your reasoning is fairly weak. Ngozi explained it well and I think a lot of people understand, because I sure did.

What you need to come to terms with is that your views hold extremely little significance here.

When I started writing this answer, I missed that you want to start a discount cinema, and I was thinking that your search was too broad — that you'll need to consider what your small business movie theater's niche is before you can search for it.

For instance, are you planning to just be a franchised location in one of the major chains? I'm guessing not, because that's not how your description reads.

I found several sources of information for other types of cinemas (including this article on upscale theaters — so the opposite of what your business plan is about: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/09/movie_theaters_for_grownups_co.html)

Maybe you've already found this threat,
    http://cinematreasures.org/news/14690_0_1_0_C/
where they're discussing how to start discount cinemas, and it's not a site that's focused on that topic. But it suggests that you'll have to visit general sites and ask for advice. (There's even an email address from someone who's college class investigated this same topic a year ago, so they may point you to some helpful statistics sites.)

But the main advice that I had for you wasn't to visit a website but to ask existing discount theaters for that information. Let them know you're doing this for a class project. If there aren't any in your city, I did an online search and found tons of them.

If you live in the US contact your nearest SCORE or Small Business Administration. Your husband may be wanting to save money, but you are being far more wise to let experts help you and these two agencies are there for you.

chinnyization, you have brashfully expressed your thoughts (and I dare say without proper reason). I agree with Bladen12345 that your argument is very weak. You obviously have misunderstood Ngozi; she is making a point on the power of foreign direct investment. I am sure that she pointed out that african governments have their failings, but her aim is to illustrate the wisdom of higher FDI as a better means of aiding africa as opposed to ‘Charity Aid’.

Sorry Mrs Ngozi, you’re well educated, but Nigeria is a s***hole. The corruption is deeper than a black hole. Maybe, just maybe, if Nigeria started with something as little as (um… i don’t know) STABLE ELECTRICITY???

I don’t know how a nation is meant to develop, let alone tackle corruption if the electricity is constantly being switched off on random daily basis. Start with a stable power supply and then i’ll take you seriously.

The business plan consists of a narrative and several financial worksheets. The narrative template is the body of the business plan.
The real value of creating a business plan is not in having the finished product in hand; rather, the value lies in the process of researching and thinking about your business in a systematic way. The act of planning helps you to think things through thoroughly, study and research if you are not sure of the facts, and look at your ideas critically. It takes time now, but avoids costly, perhaps disastrous, mistakes later.
This business plan is a generic model suitable for all types of businesses. However, you should modify it to suit your particular circumstances.
You will be judged by the quality and appearance of your work as well as by your ideas.

Here are the headings to consider :
    I.Table of Contents
    II.Executive Summary
    III.General Company Description
    IV.Products and Services
    V.Marketing Plan
    VI.Operational Plan
    VII.Management and Organisation
    VIII.Personal Financial Statement
    IX.Startup Expenses and Capitalisation
    X.Financial Plan
